What is HUID?
Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number is a six-digit alphanumeric code consisting of numbers and letters. Hallmarks used to have 4 digits. With the help of this number, a buyer can get all the information related to jewellery. Jewellers are required to upload this information on the portal of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
What is the difference between HUID and Hallmark?
Under HUID, you can get information about your jewellery in a more transparent manner compared to hallmarking. With the help of HUID, you can identify your jewellery online. This facility was not there under hallmarking. Under this new system, every piece of jewellery will have a unique number.
What additional information will be available under HUID?
Through the HUID number, you will be able to know which jeweller has made your jewellery. Along with this, you will be able to know the purity of your jewellery as well as its weight. The weight of the jewellery was not mentioned under hallmarking.
Will HUID be generated for old jewellery also?
HUID is not mandatory for old jewellery kept at your home. However, if you want, you can go to any hallmarking centre and get it marked.
Will exporters also have to generate HUID for jewellery?
It is not mandatory to generate a Hallmark Unique Identification Number on the export of jewellery. Exporters have been given a concession on this.
Can the HUID be copied and applied to another piece of jewellery?
The HUID will be different for each piece of jewellery. If there is a ring, the Hallmark Unique Identification will tell you that the piece of jewellery is a ring. The HUID will give details such as its weight, colour, and which jeweller made this jewellery. If there is any kind of deficiency in this jewellery, then the jeweller will be fully responsible for it.
Why is hallmarking of gold important?
India is the second largest consumer of gold in the world. At the same time, incidents of adulteration in gold are also common in the country. In such a situation, to protect the consumers and to curb the sale of adulterated gold, the government has started the system of hallmarking gold.
How secure is HUID data in terms of privacy?
In June 2021, the Government of India made hallmarking mandatory to curb the sale of fake gold. With this new system, all big and small jewellers who sell gold will automatically get registered. The government will be able to keep track of which jeweller has sold how much gold and to whom. HUID number is also completely safe in terms of data privacy.
How to check the purity of HUID jewellery?
To check the purity of gold, you need to download the 'BIS Care App'. After this, you can get complete information about the jewellery by going to the 'Verify HUID' section of the app.
Why has the government ended the old 4-digit hallmarking number system?
Hallmarking of gold was not mandatory till June 16, 2021. It depended on the willingness of the buyers and sellers of gold. At that time the HUID number consisted of 4 digits. However, it was only on July 1, 2021, that a six-digit HUID number was introduced. Now the government has taken this important decision to clear the confusion between 4-digit and 6-digit hallmarking. Under the new rule, only six-digit alphanumeric hallmarking will be valid, starting April 1, 2023. Four-digit hallmarking has been completely stopped.
Will jewellers be able to sell old four-digit hallmarked jewellery?
Before the implementation of this new rule, jewellers were given one year and nine months to clear the stock of four-digit jewellery. Now that deadline is over. Now only 6-digit HUID jewellery will be sold.
Will there be a HUID marking on gold biscuits and coins as well?
Yes, jewellers will have to sell gold biscuits and coins with HUID numbers along with jewellery. However, jewellers can continue to buy back un-hallmarked old gold jewellery, biscuits and coins from consumers.
Is the new HUID number mandatory for silver also?
The new rule of HUID hallmarking is currently only for gold, and not for silver.
